Food safety

Food safety is a cornerstone of public health. It is crucial that the food we consume is safe, nutritious and free from contaminants.

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region morbidity and mortality rates due to unsafe food pose a serious threat to public health and hinder socioeconomic development.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development envisions “a world where we reaffirm our commitments regarding the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation and where there is improved hygiene; and where food is sufficient, safe, affordable and nutritious”. Access to safe and nutritious food is essential to ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all. Decisions made by food regulatory authorities have enormous implications for the health, agriculture and trade sectors of every country.

In our constantly changing world national food safety systems must continually adapt to the globalization of the food trade, population growth, climate change and rapidly developing food systems. They must evolve to keep pace with emerging hazards, changing consumer perceptions and new technologies.

The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean provides leadership and support to countries as they build robust national food safety systems and promote the safe handling of food to achieve WHO Global strategy for food safety 2022–2030 targets.
