13 January 2025, Port Sudan, Sudan – World Bank, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) signed a US$ 82 million agreement to improve access to critical health services for more than 8 million vulnerable people across Sudan and strengthen the health system in the country.

More than 70% of hospitals and health facilities in conflict-affected areas in Sudan are non-operational. They have been damaged or destroyed during the conflict or lack supplies. Frontline workers, including nurses, doctors and other essential staff, have not been paid in months. The delivery of vaccine supplies and routine immunization activities have been hindered by security concerns and lack of access.

WHO Emergency Appeal: Sudan and neighbouring countries, June-December 2023The World Health Organization (WHO) is requesting US$ 145 million to meet the increasing health needs of people affected by violence in Sudan and to assist those who have fled to neighbouring countries to seek safety. This funding will allow WHO to reach 7.6 million people inside Sudan and more than 500 000 individuals forced to flee to neighbouring Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan with lifesaving interventions and delivery of essential health services over the next six months. The intense fighting in Sudan has resulted in loss of life, injuries and significant damage to the country’s infrastructure, including severely to the health facilities.
