Research in Priority Areas of Public Health Grants
|
WHO's Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean announced a special call for proposals on COVID-19 under the Research in Priority Areas of Public Health grant scheme in 2020–2021. The aim of the grant was to promote health research as a tool for national health development programming, and to increase the use of research evidence in support of the COVID-19 response. Out of 90 submitted proposals, 18 were recommended for funding from countries including Egypt, Islamic Republic of Iran, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar and United Arab Emirates.

COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness studies in the Region
|
The WHO Regional Office is supporting several countries in the Region to conduct COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness studies to allow pooling of data and provision of accurate effectiveness estimates of different vaccines. The regional multi-departmental vaccine effectiveness technical team provides support to countries that have proposals in line with one of the two main WHO-approved vaccine effectiveness protocols: cohort study among health care workers; and test-negative case–control design in severe acute respiratory infections. The TDR-supported regional training centre (Institute Pasteur of Tunis) and WHO Regional Office jointly organized two back-to-back workshops on scientific writing on 20–21 December, and tropical implementation methods and ethics on 22–25 December. The workshops aimed to the capacity of participants from different countries of the Region in health research, scientific writing and publishing.

WHO/UNESCO webinar on fair, equitable and timely allocation of COVID-19 vaccines in the Region
|
The WHO Regional Office and UNESCO (Beirut) jointly convened a webinar on 6 December 2021 to highlight the fair, equitable and timely access of COVID-19 vaccines as a global public good, as considered by the UNESCO statement on global equity and solidarity and the WHO regional response plan. Topics included: intellectual property considerations in rolling out immunization campaigns from an ethical point of view; role of data and research; realities of vaccine roll out and ethical principles; vaccine hesitancy; community engagement and the social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Annual meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Research Ethics Review Committee
|
The annual meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Research Ethics Review Committee was held on 12 December 2021. The Committee meets annually for strategic planning and to ensure compliance of health research in the Region with WHO policies and international guidance for research on human subjects. Key recommendations from the meeting included engaging WHO collaborating centres on bioethics to impart training in the Region and fostering collaboration between UNESCO chairs and WHO collaborating centres at national and regional levels.

Prioritizing health research in Egypt
|
In August and October 2021, the WHO country and Regional Office provided support to the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt to organize research priority-setting workshops for different departments within the Ministry. Research experts from the Ministry developed long lists of research statements for the following areas: 1) communicable diseases; 2) noncommunicable diseases; 3) reproductive, maternal, neonatal and adolescent child health; and 4) health systems. They then used the nominal group technique to vote on and compose shortlists for each area, ending with 10 each for further review by Ministry officials in preparation for a national stakeholder workshop planned for 2022.

Prioritizing health research in Pakistan: third technical working group meeting
|
The third meeting of the technical working group on health research prioritization was held in Islamabad, Pakistan, in November 2021. The WHO country office and Regional Office provided technical support to the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination to conduct the workshop. Participants included the director-generals of federal and provincial ministries of health, senior officers from the Ministry, representatives of United Nations sister agencies, senior faculty from academia, nongovernmental organizations and WHO staff from the country and Regional Office.

International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) and health security preparedness
|
TDR, the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and the WHO Health Security Preparedness Department announced a call for applications on “International Health Regulations and health security preparedness” to identify projects that would document, synthesize and disseminate evidence on national capacity for IHR implementation, health security and health emergency preparedness, as well as supporting the collaborative development and advancement of a preparedness research and development agenda. Forty-four proposals were received from nine countries, 13 of which were selected for WHO funding, from Egypt, Islamic Republic of Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan and Yemen.

Implementation research and gender
|
This call aims to strengthen an intersectional gender lens in implementation research to contribute to the implementation of TDR’s Intersectional Gender Research Strategy. The call is limited to applicants from low- and middle-income countries that have been engaged in, and that have expertise in, gender and intersectionality research applied to public health, implementation research, infectious disease prevention and control. Under this call, two individual research teams from two countries will be selected for 12 months’ funding up to a maximum amount of US$ 98 000 towards each proposal. The deadline for submissions is 28 January 2022.
