Programme areas
WHO has provided technical support to Oman since His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al-Said took the throne in 1970. Since this time, the Health for All goal and the primary health care strategy has guided WHO/Government collaboration in the country.
The most noteworthy successes resulting from this close collaboration include the development of an efficient primary health care system and relevant human resources for health, as well as the establishment of district-based health management. Similarly, WHO has been an active partner in the Ministry of Health’s impressive malaria and polio eradication programmes in Oman, and the control of other communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis and vaccine preventable diseases of children and adults. Some of the key areas of collaboration, based on the Country Cooperation Strategy (2010–2015) include:
Implementation of international agreements
Health promotion and community-based initiatives
Prevention and control of diseases
Emergency preparedness and response – WHO/European Union/Ministry of Health project
