A WHO mission visited Oman from 6 to 7 May 2013 to support the Food Poisoning Workshop organized by the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University. This workshop aimed to raise awareness of the different aspects of food poisoning, update participants about new emerging pathogens and their identification techniques and discuss the need to build a national food poisoning database. Participants included food safety experts from different ministers as well as academia. Foodborne diseases take a major toll on health. Millions of people fall ill and many die as a result of eating unsafe food. WHO Member States adopted a resolution in 2000 to recognize food safety as an essential public health function.
