20 December 2021 – On 17 December, Oman Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OSOG), in collaboration with the WHO country office in Oman, conducted training to build capacity in laparoscopic knowledge and skills among young obstetricians and gynaecologists in Oman.
Dr Jean Jabbour, WHO Representative in Oman, and WHO technical officers were invited to attend the opening ceremony.
The need for training on laparoscopic management emerged as a key priority for a significant number of doctors working across various facilities in Oman. Training doctors through a hands-on workshop and providing skilled opportunities for mentorship to young doctors are essential to provide and maintain high-quality services.
The laparoscopic approach is a well-recognized modality of treatment and is considered standard management in many different medical scenarios, therefore, establishing a pool of obstetric and gynaecological surgeons who will be able to provide different yet laparoscopic-oriented services in all regions of Oman with high-quality care, specifically for women, should be well recognized.
The training aims at designing a standard curriculum outline for training Omani doctors on laparoscopic management, providing training in a simulation-based setup for young OBGY doctors that require laparoscopic skills and conducting a simulation workshop to build up a pool of trainers in the country with the required skills.
