20 December 2020 – The WHO Regional Office conducted a virtual meeting to discuss the development of a regional strategy for health information systems, including civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems.

An updated regional strategy would ensure that these systems are functional and inclusive, essential for evidence-informed policy-making, and monitor the efforts of WHO, Member States and partners in achieving WHO's General Programme of Work “triple billion” targets and measuring the impact on people’s health at country level.

The virtual meeting discussed:

  • strategic directions and proposed country actions to improve health data systems;
  • regional strategic directions and actions to improve country health data systems;
  • concrete steps to implement the regional strategy and framework for evaluation.
