World No Tobacco Day 2024

“Protecting children from tobacco industry interference”, the theme of World No Tobacco Day 2024, underlined the need to protect future generations and help ensure that tobacco use continues to decline.

The campaign aimed to amplify young people’s voices, expose tobacco industry tactics and increase public awareness of the need to safeguard health policies from tobacco industry influence and protect the health of future generations.

Tobacco Free Initiatives

Ramadan campaign

The Tobacco Free Initiative, in collaboration with the Communication unit, shared messages via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook on each of the 30 days of Ramadan.

Weekly quizzes highlighted the health benefits of quitting smoking and countered the false claims used by the tabacco industry to market heated tobacco products as healthier alternatives to cigarettes.

The Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal (EMJH)

EMJH dedicated a special edition to the role of taxation in tackling the public health challenges posed by the consumption of tobacco products and sugar-sweetened beverages in the Region.
The EMJH special edition examines how tax policy can drive progress towards achieving global noncommunicable disease and sustainable development goal targets.

World Breastfeeding Week

To reinforce the theme – “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all” – of World Breastfeeding Week 2024, the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean spearheaded a wide-ranging campaign.

The campaign ran from 1 to 7 August. With messages targeting mothers and their families, policy-makers and health workers, it showcased the benefits of breastfeeding.

WHO Nutrition Work in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

For populations across the Eastern Mediterranean Region, improving nutrition throughout the life course is a key component of building a healthier future.

The latest WHO nutrition work report provides an overview of initiatives and activities undertaken to improve the nutritional status of the Region’s populations. It highlights the strategies, policies and guidelines put in place to support Member States promote diets that can help control noncommunicable diseases and enhance health and well-being.

In November 2024, the Palliative Care Report – a collaborative endeavour by WHO and the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) – was launched at WISH 2024 in Doha alongside another publication, The Investment Case for Women’s Cancer in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Regional flagship initiative: accelerating public health action on substance use

The Seventy-first Regional Committee (RC71) for the Eastern Mediterranean convened in Doha in October 2024. It endorsed 3 regional flagship initiatives, one of which aims to accelerate the public health response to substance use and substantially reduce morbidity and mortality associated with substance use disorders across the Region.

RC71 also endorsed the Regional action plan for mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies 2024–2030.

Regional action plan for mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies, 2024–2030

The 71st session of the Regional Committee endorsed the Regional action plan for mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies, 2024–2030. The plan was developed in consultation with Member States, partners and stakeholders from civil society and academia. It aims to protect, promote and provide for mental health and psychosocial well-being, reduce the suffering of populations across all phases of emergencies and contribute to building more resilient communities and health and social care systems.

WHO-UNICEF Joint Programme on Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being and Development of Children and Adolescents

WHO-UNICEF Joint Programme on Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being and Development of Children and Adolescents is a 10-year joint action plan that is being implemented in Egypt and Jordan.

In Egypt, a multisectoral committee on child and adolescent mental health is reviewing legal frameworks and developing plans for strengthening service delivery across the health, education and child protection sectors.

In Jordan, the Joint Programme is supporting the training of primary health care workers, capacity building awareness activities and the strengthening of health information systems.

Anti-Stigma campaign

WHO is committed to fighting misconceptions, stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health.

The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean launched a series of 6 testimonial videos for people with lived experience (PWLE) – from Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon and Morocco – to enhance mental health literacy.

The videos are a powerful tool for countering stigma and discrimination and empowering people with lived experience to be equal partners in shaping policies and developing services for mental health and substance use disorders. WHO Regional and Country Offices developed the videos in close collaboration with civil society organizations and PWLE from different countries in the Region.

Afghan visit

During WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Region Dr Hanan Balkhy’s visit to Afghanistan she inaugurated the Balkh 50-bed Women and Children Drug Addiction Treatment Centre. One of 12 drug addiction treatment centres supported by WHO, the Balkh Centre will strengthen action against substance use disorders.
