12 November 2014 – The WHO Regional Office is hosting a 3-day national trachoma elimination planning workshop for Yemen in Cairo from 11 to 13 November 2014.
A 6-person team from Yemen used the findings from recent trachoma mapping in Yemen to design a multi-year plan that aims to eliminate trachoma from the country by 2020. Specific steps to implement the plan are being determined and measures for monitoring to elimination decided. With technical support from WHO and financial support from Yemen's Ministry of Public Health and Population and other partners it is expected that elements of the plan will be initiated within the next few months.
The workshop is being chaired by, and supported by SightSavers, a UK-based organization dedicated to the elimination of trachoma globally. Mr Simon Bush, SightSavers Neglected Tropical Diseases Coordinator, is helping to facilitate the workshop.
