29 November 2020 – The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the Dermatology Department of La Rabta Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, University of Al Manar 2, Tunis, Tunisia, as a new collaborating centre for the case management of cutaneous leishmaniasis, valid until 2023.
In coordination with WHO, the Dermatology Department will provide support in:
- conducting training programmes on the clinical management of cutaneous leishmaniasis;
- developing/revising guidelines on cutaneous leishmaniasis management, in coordination with WHO;
- collaborating with other WHO collaborating centres in the clinical management of cutaneous leishmaniasis.
The Dermatology Department at La Rabta Hospital will be the second WHO collaborating centre in Tunisia following the National Board for Family and Population, International Training and Research Centre in Reproductive Health and Population currently designated as a WHO collaborating centre for training and research in reproductive health.
Established in 1940, the Dermatology Department is an academic dermatological institution with extensive experience in responding to epidemics of variola, typhus, plague, cholera and syphilis. Throughout the years, the department has expanded to include research, laser, mycology, paediatric and dermato-allergology units. In addition to local experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Tunisia, the team from this institution has been collaborating with WHO in the development of guidelines and capacity-building.
With this designation, the Institution will be part of a network which currently includes more than 800 centres in over 80 Member States, working in areas such as nursing, occupational health, communicable diseases, nutrition, mental health, chronic diseases and health technologies.
