In an effort to support the Libyan national influenza centre a mission was conducted by a team of WHO experts from 2 to 8 March 2013. The mission aimed at assessing the newly established virus isolation unit and its capabilities to serve as the national influenza centre for surveillance at Eastern Mediterranean Region.
The mission activities included:
field visits for assessment of the competence and capacity of the disease control reference laboratory
assessment of some health facilities to serve as seasonal collecting sites including Alenetak, El shaheed and Gergaresh medical health centres and El Horrya polyclinic;
assessment of the laboratory quality management system required for the implementation of the International health regulations and monitoring in Libya.
A set of recommendations was provided for both laboratories and collecting sites and was shared with relevant stakeholders.
