The International Classification of Diseases is the standard diagnostic tool for epidemiology, health management, and clinical purposes. This includes the analysis of the general health situation of population groups. It is used to monitor the incidence and prevalence of diseases and other health problems, providing a picture of the general health situation of countries and populations6 February 2018 – On 5 February 2018, World Health Organization with financial support from the European Union (EU) organized capacity-building workshops for International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-) compliant death certification, for Libya Ministry of Health physicians. The workshop aimed to enhance the quality of writing death certificates according to WHO standards, so that the accurate cause of death was determined to assist decision-makers to plan for effective public health interventions. The workshop was facilitated by staff from the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
Two consecutive workshops of 2 days each are planned which will be attended by 80 participants from 25 different hospitals covering all the geographical areas. Capacity- building in death certification is an important milestone in improving the health information system of Libya. A well functioning death certification system will lead to informed decision-making which will help Libya save many precious lives," said Dr Jaffar Hussain, WHO Representative for Libya.
The workshop is part of the EU-funded project known as the "Strengthening the health information system and medicine supply chain management “SHAMS” project". The WHO country office for Libya is the implementing agency. The project was launched in January 2017 and is planned to continue for 2 years.
