Participants from nine countries in the Region have completed the first Professional Certificate Programme in Laboratory Leadership and Management. The programme participants and their mentors are from clinical and public health laboratories in Iraq, Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, Qatar, Oman, and Yemen.
The certificate programme was created by the International Training and Education Centre for Health at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA. The nine months long professional development programme have been implemented across the Middle East and North Africa in partnership with the WHO Regional Office based in Cairo, Egypt. Participants were recruited through Ministries of Health and selected by the University and the Regional Office.
Overall, the programme was very successful with 80% of participants completing the programme and making impactful improvements in their laboratories. As a result of this programme participants created a professional association, the “East Mediterranean Society for Laboratory Management” and a website will be created to facilitate networking of laboratory professionals in the Region.
