What we do

Road safety: speed management

To facilitate the formulation of the “safe system approach” in the national road safety systems of Member States, the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean has developed a road safety system framework for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been nominated as a pilot country in demonstrating the safe system approach. In collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission and other national partners, Islamic Republic of Iran with the technical support of WHO will demonstrate enhanced safety model corridors focusing on speed management based on the safe system and results-based management approaches to offer a good and viable model for other countries to manage speed on roads.

What we have achieved

Road safety: speed management

Six corridors have been selected in 3 provinces – Isfahan, Markazi, and Khorasan – to impose safe speed limits, reduce traffic congestion and implement risk reduction interventions based on national protocols. The implementation phase of this project is currently under way.

Strengthening the national road safety lead agency

The establishment of an effective management system is a prerequisite for achieving road safety and in collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission, solutions have been identified to strengthen the national road safety lead agency in Islamic Republic of Iran taking into consideration best practices globally.

What is next

Road safety: speed management

Gradual extension of the speed management programme to other pillars of the safe system approach will be adopted to ensure inclusive and comprehensive approach to road safety.

Strengthening national capacity on post-crash severe injury reporting system for policy-makers

Monitoring the number of severe injuries is one of the most important impact indicators in the speed management project. Measuring, registering and reporting the severity of injuries is a prerequisite for improving the quality of post-crash services. WHO is providing technical support to the establishment of a system for regular reporting of relevant data to the National Road Safety Commission.
