A training course on ship inspection and issuing of ship sanitation certificates as required under the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR) was held in Qatar in November 2013. According to provisions of article 20 of the IHR, States Parties are required to designate ports to implement the IHR (2005) core capacities as detailed in Annex 1. They are also required to ensure that the ship sanitation certificates are issued in accordance with the requirements of article 39 and Annex 3 of the IHR (2005).
To respond to these needs, the Regional Office conducted a training course targeting officials responsible for ship inspection and issuance of ship sanitation certificates. The training aimed at:
building the capacity of those involved in ship inspection services and issuing ship sanitation certificates as required under the IHR;
identify gaps and needs in meeting the IHR requirement at designated ports at State Parties.
