Introduction
Safe motherhood – maternal and neonatal health and family planning – is the priority component of reproductive health in almost all countries of the Region. Skilled birth attendance and family planning are the most effective measures for promoting maternal and newborn health.
The women’s and reproductive health programme works under the following strategic directions:
Provision of technical guidance for the formulation and implementation of effective, evidence-based policies and interventions, aiming for universal access to care
Build country capacity in service delivery
Enhancement of the synergies between various related programmes (such as health promotion, nutrition, HIV, emergency and humanitarian action)
Support research and development of technologies and interventions
Support in monitoring health situation, assessment of progress towards internationally agreed goals and targets
