27 February- 2017 | Cairo – The WHO country office in Egypt received a courtesy invitation from the national joint committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Health and Population to discuss public health emergencies of international concern (PHEIC) on 26 February 2017. Dr Jean Jabbour, WHO Representative in Egypt, accompanied by Dr Omar Abouelata (Technical Officer for International Health Regulations) updated the committee on WHO’s approach to strengthening IHR public health core capacities and recent reforms to WHO’s emergency programme. Dr Jabbour talked about WHO’s support to Member States and how the Organization could assist countries in better responding to PHEIC.
During the meeting, Dr Ahmed Hadad, chairman of the committee, outlined the roles and responsibilities of members of the committee and the coordination mechanism between the committee and other stakeholders such as International Air Transport Association and International Civil Aviation Organization. Dr Jabbour assured Dr Hadad of WHO’s continuing technical support in enhancing IHR core capacities at points of entry and in other areas of public health.
