23 August 2016 – WHO Egypt contry office organized a biking marathon on 29 July 2016, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Health and Population.
The event was organized at the Giza Pyramids and was inaugurated by the WHO Representative for Egypt and the first undersecretary for the preventive sector.
More than 300 participants from the Ministry of Health and Population, universities, civil society organizations and United Nations agencies joined the event and rode for about 4.6 kilometres.
Participants were given educational materials about prevention of hepatitis C virus – flyers, posters, booklets. Also 5 TV spots produced by WHO Egypt on prevention of hepatitis C were broadcast to the participants. Bikers also wore campaign materials, including T-shirts and caps with the campaign slogan (either us or virus C).
During the event we organized a blood donation campaign to encourage participants to voluntary non-remunerated blood donation.
Ambulance, fire brigade and police were present to secure the event.
