School video competition raises awareness of familial hypercholesterolemia
21 February 2023, Muscat – Familial hypercholesterolemia is a common life-threatening genetic disorder. It increases the risk of heart disease and early heart attacks, and its threat is not limited to older people, as it also affects children and can result in increased risk of heart disease or stroke at an early age. Children with familial hypercholesterolemiado not exhibit signs of the disease until they are older but some may develop signs as young as 3 years old. It should be noted that familial hypercholesterolemia may be more prevalent in Oman due to consanguineous marriages, which represent 50-55% of all marriages. Joint efforts by The Ministry of Health, The Ministry of Education, The Oman Society of Lipid and Atherosclerosis (OSLA), and the World Health Organization, collaborated to introduce an FH short video competition to educate and raise awareness at a country level.
