Intercountry meeting on analysis and assessment of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

23 November 2015 – The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean's Regional Centre for Environmental Health Action (CEHA) is organizing an Intercountry meeting on analysis and assessment of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in the Eastern Mediterranean Region in Amman, Jordan from 24 to 26 November 2015.

The meeting will review the progress of the Eastern Mediterranean Region towards the Millenium Development Goal (MDG) water and sanitation targets, identify regional challenges and discuss priorities for the post-2015 development agenda within the context of the new Sutainable Development Goals (SDGs).The priorities include extending water, sanitation and hygiene services in the least-developed countries, sustaining achievements in the face of water scarcity and climate change, water safety management, water requirements for health, safe irrigation of food crops with treated wastewater, and water, sanitation and hygiene services in health care facilities, schools and emergencies.

The meeting will guide the Region’s approach to transitioning from MDG to SDG water and sanitation targets, provide a roadmap for the implementation and scaling-up of water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in countries, and discuss the consolidation of water, sanitation and hygiene monitoring programmes (the Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation, the Global Assessment and Analysis of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and the Global Expanded Monitoring Initiative).

The meeting will be attended by around 50 delegates from 16 countries the Eastern Mediterranean Region, representatives of regional and international agencies, and WHO staff from country, regional and headquarters levels.
