Training workshop on Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources in Bahrain

Photo credit: WHO/WHO Bahrain.4 August 2024, Manama, Bahrain – WHO organized a three-day refresher training workshop on Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) at the WHO Country Office in Bahrain between 21 and 23 July 2024.

The workshop, facilitated by the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean’s Health Emergency Information and Risk Assessment Unit, was attended by 10 participants from the Ministry of Health’s Public Health Directorate. Following on from a workshop held between 27 and 28 September 2022, it was the second training workshop on EIOS conducted in Bahrain.

Photo credit: WHO/WHO BahrainEIOS is the leading open-source intelligence network for public health decision-making and provides the media scanning component of event-based surveillance which is used to detect and respond to potential disease outbreaks and other public health events. The EIOS initiative is based at the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin, Germany.

The workshop trained participants on basic concepts of surveillance and early warning and response. Sessions included an introduction to EIOS, integration and incorporation of EIOS into the current surveillance system, the application of EIOS in context-based scenarios and live demonstrations.

On the fourth day, a field visit was conducted to the Ministry of Health’s Public Health Directorate to explore the current system of integrated disease surveillance and the importance of integrating and strengthening all components of the surveillance system, including event-based surveillance.
