An estimated 55 000 people die annually from rabiesKabul, 25 February 2013 – The communicable disease, surveillance and response programme of WHO Afghanistan, in collaboration with the Communicable Diseases Control Directorate (CDC) of the Ministry of Public Health, Afghanistan, are planning to conduct training sessions on the prevention and control of rabies this month in Afghanistan, with financial assistance from the European Union.
Participants will include provincial CDC officers, environmental health and regional veterinary officers and disease early warning system (DEWS) regional coordinators from all 34 provinces in Afghanistan. These two-day training events will be conducted in three batches (25–26 and 27–28 February, and 3–4 March) in Kabul. In total around 100 health professionals will be trained.
The prime objectives of the training are to: 1) update the knowledge of participants on rabies prevention, diagnosis, treatment and control; and 2) strengthen coordination among related stakeholders in rabies prevention and control activities.
