Country accountability roadmap on maternal, newborn, and child health in Afghanistan

Shadoul, WHO Representative in Afghanistan, addressing delegates at the workshop on the accountability roadmap on maternal, newborn and child healthThe targets of MDG 4 and 5 are to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health, respectively The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan organized a 2-day national workshop on the country accountability roadmap on maternal, newborn and child health in Afghanistan. The main objectives of this workshop are to provide orientation to key country stakeholders for women and child health, share and discuss the result of assessment of the current situation, and to finalize a 4-year (2012–2015) country roadmap for Afghanistan.

H.E. Dr Abdul Basir Sarwar, Deputy Minister of Public Health, said that Ministry of Public Health considers maternal, newborn and child health as a priority area among its national policies and strategies. Reduction of maternal and child mortality and morbidity and improvement of maternal and neonatal child health has been a major commitment of the Ministry in the last 10 years towards achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5.

Dr Ahmed F. Shadoul, WHO Representative in Afghanistan, said that women and children are at the heart of the MDGs and success on the health-related MDGs would help drive success in reaching the targets of all the MDGs.
