11 June 2024 – Mohammad*, a 23-year-old from Paktia province, Afghanistan, has faced significant challenges over the past 3 years due to mental illness. It began with a loss of interest in socializing with friends, leading him to seek solace in frequent visits to the mosque. Mohammad then developed an obsession with cleanliness, which eventually interfered with his job and daily life.

During this period, he was also using alcohol and other substances – and it took him a year to recognize the harm that they caused. On returning to Afghanistan after a spell in Turkey, Mohammad experienced delusions of grandeur, believing that he was the country’s leader.

Concerned for his well-being, Mohammad’s family intervened and took him to see a doctor. Despite initially resisting treatment, Mohammad eventually found himself at the Mental Health Hospital in Kabul, where he is now receiving medical care. This national facility is supported by WHO under a project funded by the European Union (EU).

“My family has been with me through everything,” Mohammad explains. “They’ve taken me to see different doctors, and now I’m starting to feel better. Looking back, I’ve learned that it’s important to listen to your family and get help when you’re facing a challenge. Even if you don’t realize it, they can sense when something’s wrong and support you [to] recover.”

“So, if you’re experiencing something similar, please listen to your family’s advice and consult a doctor,” he added. “With the right support and treatment, improvement is possible.”

Mohammad attributes his progress to the support of his family and professional intervention. His tale offers hope to those grappling with psychological distress in Afghanistan. Thanks to the WHO–EU joint partnership, they can now seek the medical care they need.
